In hindsight, do you think it was right for Vince to push him as far as he did?

He won the Rumble in 2020 and main evented WrestleMania beating Brock Lesnar clean for the WWE Championship.

I think he's great, but compared to others who have gone through the gauntlet of Rumble, Mania main event and big win he never seemed able to consistently stay up there as a big star.

I don't know if it's because he's British so there's a disconnect with the American fans, or bad booking, Covid fucking him or if he just doesn't have the IT factor...
What exactly is holding him back, or is he just not capable of being the level of 'main event but not top guy'-type like an Orton, Punk, Seth, Edge etc?

He's like a lot of the fake main eventers Vince had in the 00s and 10s. He just doesn't have it. He's an Edge. He's a guy who can play pretend main eventer if need be, but he's not a difference maker.

Yes. It needed to happen. Given Drew’s path if it hadn’t happened then we likely wouldn’t be talking about the guy in a main event context today. The timing of it with the pandemic was a shame, but it was an entirely valid and successful run from that Rumble to him beating Brock. Having him lose to Orton was more than questionable though and the fact that Drew’s peak coincided with the start of the Bloodline was the most damning part of it all. Bad take. Edge is absolutely a main event guy. He main evented two Wrestlemanias. That alone sets him apart from the point you’re trying to make. He’s carried shows. He’s been world champion as a face and as a heel. He may not have been the face of the company, but he was THE guy for babyfaces to feud with across the mid to late 2000s. Cena, Undertaker, Batista, Shawn, Rey, Orton, Benoit, Van Dam, Kane, etc. any babyface name worth a damn during those years feuded with Edge

Either way I don't see how being British is some sort of disconnect with American fans, several of WWE's biggest stars are Canadian so nationality isn't a factor

All the good points have already been made ITT. Great athlete, good look, he's intense, good promos and paid his dues. But he was put behind people like Rollins who danced around in outfits and did the same flippy moves for years in the ring.
There must be some reason the office stopped looking at him so fondly. Sad thing is, if there was anywhere else to go, he would go there.
