The same thing he did do. He didn't leave because of injuries. No that he wasn't hurt. Every wrestler is banged up. He left because he was wildly addicted to drugs. He never even really left. He pops up so many times throughout 99 and 2000. 2001 might be the only year where you don't see him on tv at all

Things wouldn't have changed much. He was more or less written off TV a month before WM14 even happened after he no showed that February PPV and had to be replaced by Savio Vega (KWAB) I remember him cutting a promo in a fucking Denny's or something and not doing much else in the entire lead up to the PPV.
So he either quits, or gets suspended or something after he jobs, then he goes to WCW, comes back to feud with Triple H because DX was getting big at that time, or goes to rehab

Shawn’s back was probably healthy enough to wrestle around SummerSlam, acting like the back injury was the reason he didn’t wrestle until 2003 was a work, he was just too much a fucking junkie and business was good enough that Vince didn’t need him.
