Attitude Era smarks all fucked off to TNA, ROH, and JP promotions while the product was still not kid friendly so there were no casuals. It was the only time WWE catered exclusively to dudebros and surprise surprise it created the last genuine crossover stars in the industry (Cena and Batista).

Even Roman is just a wrestling guy. The decline started during the PG Era and it's been all downhill since then.

It still sold out arenas, RAW was still the #1 show on cable, PPV sales dipped somewhat and wrestling cooled a bit but it's not like there was a mass exodus of fans.
