I mean, he was popular but he wasn't exceptionally popular. From what I remember of the time, people did like him but he was in the same company with Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Randy Savage, Roddy Piper, Bret Hart, Rey Mysterio and other guys who were mega-draws. Compared to them, he wasn't much of a draw. Nobody bought a ticket primarily to see La Parka but he usually got a good pop when he came out.

Story is La Parka wanted to work a mask vs. mask match in Mexico against a big heel but WCW wouldn't let him so he faked an injury in the match. It matches up because he spent the next 3 months in Mexico before coming back.
