I never watched WCW, and all of my knowledge of it is second-hand. But it seems like everyone says things that are drastically different. And I'm sure as shit not gonna believe everything that WWE puts out about it.

Some people act like the finger poke of doom killed the whole entire thing at one, yet some say that it was a complete non-issue only exacerbated by obese smarks, and that it didn't even put a dent in WCW. Some say Russo killed it, some say he was actually bringing ratings up. Some say the NWO died in 98, 99, 00, Goldberg was over for a month tops, Jericho was outpopping everyone...

Lads I wish I had the time to watch it all in a reasonable timeframe, I almost want to be an autist and watch it at 1.5 spped

Goldberg was the biggest factor in killing WCW. Here's the list:

So that summarizes a huge investment that not only had 1 payoff (Hulk losing, which already happened several times with Luger, Sting and Piper) but didn't pan out to anything beyond that! Bret Hart was building great momentum in WCW, and watching it again on the WCW youtube channel really highlights how fun it was getting and how he could have took the mantle. The only other major mistake WCW did was not doing what WWE did with Hogan. Giving him a major storyline back to Yellow and Red. He should have teamed with Steiner and not been able to be as vicious to Sting and had sympathy and making BPP the top heel

Its been 25 years since I watched WCW so my memory is pretty basic.
The best years that i remember were 1996-1998
I can't remember specific matches that stand out as its just been too long
But outside of the big one being the NWO invasion angle
I remember Goldberg being a big thing
Scott Stiener blowing up as Big Poppa pump
Jericho's heel run was entertaining
Wolfpack was hot as hell for a time
It probably all could have been bigger if Bichoff had control of it all and knew how to book but he didn't on either
It was the definition of the inmates running the asylum and large egos fucking everything up.

early WCW has a bunch of great shit in hindsight, those years just get talked about less because they weren't popular at the time, gay rape memes made it borderline impossible to bring up the actual best in-ring year of WCW on /pw/, and that era doesn't make for alluring documentary material

Sting singlehandedly killed WCW at starrcade 97 when that fuckin moron showed up flabby and pasty and strung out of his mind. WCW went out of business literally before the show ended. I was there, I saw the janitor scraping Bischoffs name off the door at the arena and the “4 Sale” sign go up on the lawn

The biggest factor in WCW's demise was lack of stars. That's why they brought in Russo in the first place, he was a desperate attempt to establish a bit of star power.
They had a bunch of guys they could have been pushing when they pushed Goldberg. Could have built up a number of them all at once, like WWF was doing.
But it's impossible to get people over when you got one guy getting a mega push. No one's going to get taken seriously when you have this one guy who's getting all the attention and who can dominate them in a couple minutes.
As you said, Goldberg was absolutely the biggest factor.

It was also them never moving on from the nwo. Wolfpac was hot for a minute but by fall brawl 98 the nwo hollywood's biggest guys were shitters like stevie ray and vincent and scott norton. sure norton was over in NJPW but that meant fuck all in 98 WCW. What felt like an amazing story from the outsiders first attacking all the way to starrcade 97 was a story that progressed and had peaks and lows and twists.

Then they just stagnated and did nothing

It all could've had made sense if
a) nWo had a good SOULED OUT
b) nWo DID take over Nitro like planned
Instead they leaned too far into being different with Souled Out.
And dismantling Nitro for 12 minutes, in the middle of the show, instead at the end, leading into next week being the debut with proper build up and planning. They WCW would have had the brand split idea first and people jumping back and forth between shows for easy pops.

Before nitro you had three shows. WCW Saturday Night was 2 hours and main show. Then you had a one hour show Sunday morning and one at 6:05 on Sunday. One was called Power Hour and other the Main Event.

Sting was over. Even as a kid I didn't think he was great on mic, but he had charisma. Flair was the main guy and they'd bring in guys like Steamboat or Funk for around a year to have feuds with him. Title would change times multiple times during these feuds and Flair would always win the blow off because he was the guy sticking around. They also had Clash of Champions several times a year which was almost like a PPV on tv. Saturday Night's Main Event was sort of like that.
Luger was also pretty big and WCW did a better job with him WWF.
They had cool gimmick matches like wargames, tower of doom, battle bowl.
They had a lot of titles were WWF only had 3. Did they really need a United States tag team championship?
Yellow/red Hogan comes in and goes right to the top. Savage came in around the same time. They could have done a better job with heels for them. I really remember only Flair and Vader seeing legit. They started Dungeon of Doom which sucked until the Giant came in. I think around this time Nitro started. It was not must see tv.
Hall comes in and it gets interesting. Then Nash and it gets more interesting. Suddenly you have to watch because they show up at any time and you don't know who is next.
Hogan is the 3rd man and the marks couldn't believe it. NWO gets interesting for maybe a year or two (?). Goldberg comes in and gets over. Crow Sting is cool. DDP starts to emerge.
Flair now is an after thought. WWF adds younger guys like Jericho and Giant while WCW adds older guys like Piper, Warrior, and Bret.
