The goal was to sign up all the HOTTEST FREE AGENTS around the world and to basically kill off all non-WWE promotions. AEW came along, bankrolled by a rich money mark. AEW was a super indie and opponent to WWE and for the first couple of years, did very well. NXT lost big time to AEW. HHH's entire blueprint for NXT, was ended by Tiny. HHH's job was to prevent anything like AEW happening but he failed miserably. Because of this, Vince demoted HHH, removing him from talent and NXT and changed it to be about college athletes opposed to internet darlings.
So HHH has an axe to grind with AEW and Tony, working himself into a shoot and needing to sign all of Tony's toys.
