On WOR they were talking about out how WWE and New Japan might be in negotiations for Shinsuke to work Tanahashi at 1/4 show. Dave then goes on to speculate about the potential partnership and hints that things with NJPW and AEW “arent perfect but it’s on good terms”. I wonder why?.

Even if NJPW is pissy about Tony's poaching killing the partnership wouldn't really solve that either. If Tony wants them then Tony will keep throwing money at it until he gets them. That said it won't surprise me if trying to negotiate with Tony on how to use Takeshita and other AEW talents is a nightmare compared to when they borrow CMLL talents. I don't think NJPW will kill the partnership but I can see them heavily scaling back how much they do with AEW aside from maybe Forbidden Door.

Yeah Gabe in particular had a truly unique connection to the domestic audience as a foreigner, something even Kenny didn't have, and after that first great clash between him and Tsuji at New Beginning all those years of him ascending just imploded with that Death Riders run-in. Gets a big moment at Dominion but it's tainted, gets injured in a critical G1 and ultimately puts Tsuji over and effectively ends the War Dogs as they are.

Gabe is interesting because he absolutely sucks in America. His Strong bookings were stupid, even for Strong. The bizarre presentation as the 5th string player for the Death Riders is trash. It was also all contradictory to how he was primarily presented in Japan, a violent, crazy gaijin who loved New Japan.
I hope he gets paid well and everything but I feel like he's going to crash and burn pretty hard in AEW. Assuming he goes anyway, not like it's actually confirmed

If he was smart he would have done another year in NJPW doing his "i am Shin Nippon" stuff. He might have even got an IWGP Heavyweight run out of it and would have been able to add another zero to his offer from Tony (plus he'd he more of a smark/meltzer darling). But he blew his load and took Tony's excited offer straight after the Omega match and Tony already doesn't know what to do with him. He's fated to be a background Death Rider now. I assume he'll be another AEW wrestler thats barely used and then has a crash out on social media

Also, I know a lot of New Japan fans aren't thrilled about an AEW guy being their world champion, but how sick would it be if Gunther had a run as champion, maybe send Sami and Ilja to wrestle in the G1. Fucking kino.

This would be good because he'd actually be presented as an invading foreign heel. Unlike Takeshita who's weirdly presented as the "hero to unify pro-wrestling" while the crowds walk out and boo him

Then what's the point of the partnership? The Japanese fans do not give a fuk besides someone returning like Kenny or Okada, and that almost never happens but they have to endure Heavyweight title matches with Jungle Boy and Ricochet. AEW doesn't even respect the rules for the divisions in NJPW.
