Most likely it's Okada or maybe Kenny. Nakamura might be doable depending on how anal WWE is about NJPW's partnership with AEW. Cena might be willing to retire Tanahashi but I don't see that match being Cena's final match.

I don't know anon. Cena is a memer and Triple H "gets it". In a meta jokey way this would be Cena's final Make-A-Wish. Tanahashi has been obsessed with Cena for years and years, he even went through his gym phase where he tried to get and stay swole because of Cena.
This would be a great final joke.

He didn't say shit he just said he was told their are tough negotiations happening at the moment then opined that it might mean it's not someone that is easily attainable, so either someone that's left NJPW (Naito), not in contract with NJPW but in contract elsewhere (Okada, Nakamura), or someone retired (who knows). Tanahashi has a lot of respect for Omega. He was also brought to tears by Kidd/Omega at the start of the year. I can see him pushing for Gabe Kidd 2bh but I have a feeling it's a toss up between Omega and Okada. Okada returning to NJPW would probably be the best in terms of business.

I honestly think Okada gives him the best match. Kenny requires his opponent to be somewhat athletic to have a banger. Okada can have a methodical groundfest and really work the "I'm a heel thing" now in front of the crowd.

Okada's style of match is best to hide Tanahashi's flaws and if you've seen him wrestle in the last two years, you know he can barely fucking move and needs carrying.

See the thing about Okada is that he's a long match wrestler. He needs you to go 40 minutes to tell that story and make his spots matter. Kenny is adaptable, but Okada is good at ONE kind of match and I genuinely don't think Tanahashi has a 40 minute full pelt match in him. Kenny can work around anyone.

I mean, it's a thing for a reason. Sure, it's a foregone conclusion that the opponent is going to win but the point is that the "retiring legend" is anointing the career of the guy who goes over him, in a sense.
That's the reason a lot of people were pissed with the idea of Sting facing the Bucks going into his retirement.
