A similar thing happened with Honky Tonk Man and WCW.
WCW was bringing him in, unsigned, to do jobs. At a certain point, he refused to do a job, not because he was too good, but because he wasn't signed and it would hurt indie bookings. He would have done any jobs they wanted if they just signed him.

But the difference between Nox and Honky was that Honky was getting booked all over the place. Tegan literally never gets booked and was crying that she didn't get booked.
