They had momentum after years of some shit WWE product. They had Cody, Kenny, Jericho, Punk, Bryan and hell even Adam Cole contributed to the buzz a little bit. All while showcasing new talent in MJF, Guevara, Hangman, establishing them. Losing Cody was the first big hit, despite his reception from the fans he was consistently doing good numbers of AEW in the ratings. Then of course the Punk melty was the second hit. The illusion was shattered and it was all downhill from there with the fights, endless drama, injuries, shitty spots.

See, I agree, but I hate fags saying this in retrospect. WWE was terrible at that time, and they still had higher ratings during AEW's supposed greatest promo and feud.
