The point of a retirement match is so that the person retiring puts over the other guy, usually an up-and-coming star, and that will help this guy's credibility as a fighter in the ring, so it helps him get over with the fans.
But nowadays everybody knows all of the workings of the business and they know what this is supposed to do. So it can't really have that effect on people. This only works when you believe all of this shit is real. It doesn't work when you know the match was fake and he only won cause the guy that is retiring was willing to lose for him to make him look better.
Maybe it works on kids, who still believe all of this shit is real, but how many of the fans are even still kids. Mostly it's just middle-aged guys still watching this crap.
