I think it's more telling about AEW and how much it relies on wrestlers nearing retirement for business. WWE can run these one-off specials for Goldberg and Cena and have them put over a current top guy without even featuring it on their weekly shows or typical ppvs. Meanwhile AEW needs to show older talent that if they come to the retirement home that is AEW they'll be treated like gods and prioritized over current talent because they have no actual star power within their current roster and need those older stars in order to have any kind of name value

This minus the GMS grammar kek. The match hardly even featured Sting. It was more about jerking off Darby and the Bucks with Sting's name slapped on it to get people to watch. It did nothing for AEW and their tv ratings only went down afterwards

lolno. AEW's ratings immediately went down after Sting retired. It turns out a lot of people were actually watching for him and when he stopped wrestling they just left. Didn't matter that he won. Now AEW is failing to hit 500k half the time and doing a Rampage-tier key demo. "Boosted the brand" ahahahaha

Wins and losses don't matter in a post-kayfabe industry. Finisher spam does, though. I couldn't bring myself to care who would win after seeing so many kick outs of finishers. No one gets over by winning anymore, they get over by having a sing-along theme and a marketable catchphrase. Everyone knows it's bullshit and no one cares to pretend it's not anymore. They remind you at every step.

What this really means is just catchy theme music. Which has always been around. If anything themes today as a whole are far less over than they've ever been to the point people are wishing WWE ousts Def Rebel. If you think crowds wouldn't be singing Real American or Ass Man if they were current themes as well then you're only kidding yourself
