A narcissist insists on praise
because they have a fragile ego and deep-seated insecurities, using constant admiration (narcissistic supply) to inflate their sense of superiority and self-worth, as their internal sense of value is external and unstable. They need this validation to maintain their grand image, often exaggerating achievements, fishing for compliments, or fishing for attention, and can react with rage or entitlement when they don't get it, viewing a lack of praise as a personal slight or humiliation.
