The only way this could make sense to me would be if the masterplan was to have Cena finally triumph over Brock clean in his retirement match. That obviously didn't happen. The fans already view Brock as a monstrous force so this squash didn't help him. Maybe Cena had some misguided idea here that could not but be lost on the audience like his "going peacefully" idea against Gunther. In any case, this match was a waste.

He was over as a legitimate threat from the moment he debuted in 2002 and pinned Rock clean for the world title months later. Everything he's accomplished in a WWE ring and the UFC octagon has permanently legitimized him. He's as over as he'll ever be. People don't need reminders that grizzly bears can kill you.
