This was total booking whiplash and dare I say an unwinnable situation for the guy. People gloss over the fact that Jericho had lost most of his heat after doing nothing but jobs for two years, with only Rock and Benoit really going 50/50 with him because they didn't care about upsetting the son-in-law. Cope all you want, but that's the hard truth about this so called "bad" title reign.

That wasn't the plan. That's just what happened when Hogan got such babyface reactions that they pivoted. From the beginning, Jericho was literally just a guy holding the belts until HHH got there.

No one foresaw that. Seriously. Just having watched it happen, you would have to assume the plan was it’s supposed to be heel Austin vs face HHH.
Long term I mean. It’s the culmination of all the Two Man Power trip and running down the car and the Austin Heel turn. That was a very weird year for WWE though. Or F rather. 9/11. Austin flip flopping as a heel. The Invasion just shit out instead of planned out. Vince only half heartedly doing it because everyone was convincing him he’d be leaving dimes on the table otherwise. Bringing in the hold out guys a few months after the rest. Triple H getting the gruesome injury. At some point they wrapped up Austin/HHH early with that gimmick match. HHH comes back from the injury mega over which I they were assuming. Probably the only time he came anywhere close to getting reactions like the other top guys. The Garden, all the shows in the northeast. The Rumble just mega pops. Him and Austin brawling at the Rumble and the reaction it got clearly pointed to what people wanted. Instead they got him working with Jericho as Stephanie’s bitch boy. It fizzled badly especially compared to Rock/Hogan which legend.

not by the time he won the title. Jericho was massive in early 2000, but the continuous booking of him as a joke made him pretty much a punching bag by 2002. That's why nobody bought his title reign as anything but a fluke to swerve the smarks on the internet.

I watched this night back recently, pretty sure Austin and Rock interfere in each others matches, Kurt Angle maybe interferes in them too?
It wasn’t booked like “omg this dominant midget just fucking beat everyone” it was booked as “fuck this chickenshit heel sneaked the win because the top stars took each other out”
Good booking but it wasn’t designed to make Jericho the star, it was designed to make him a transitional champion
