I think the ones who did simply became AEW fans. WWE and NJPW are two different kinds of wrestling products, and it's easy to understand why people would like one or the other, or both. It just comes down to personal preference. But AEW's entire identity is that it's against WWE. It's been that way since day one, and hating WWE is what motivates their fans.

I could see someone coming to this conclusion because of console wars but I just want to watch cool wrestling and this is the case for most AEW fans I've encountered. If they didn't exist I would probably ignore American wrestling completely.
