Meltzer broke his system years ago and his ratings are worthless now, but it's not like Angle ever had a match that deserved 5 stars. The reality is that Dave was an Angle mark and used to overrate his work too.

If you stuck prime Angle in an era of a company that was genuinely trying to have high end matches he'd have 5. The era of WWE he was in kept the action simple and stupid.

I think it's because he had his best matches at a time when every finish was run in bullshit or DQ or other shenanigans happened in the match. I still think his best match is at Lockdown against Joey Samoey personally but there's very few matches in WWE he had that didn't have a level of bullshit to him. That one match where he took the title from Austin on PPV is probably the one where he was at his best but Austin wasn't a top tier dance partner at that time so it pulls the match down a bit for me at least.

I've always thought that Angle was a 5 star wrestler that unfortunately was paired up with 3 star workers too often

I think this was let down by Shane being a punching bag and only having one notable spot in the match. It was essentially an elongated squash.

I liked the Lesnar match but it's a bit muddled in the middle and although fans point to the shooting star they completely ignore that 3 minutes in the middle where it's just selling and ankle lock escapes.

Here's the thing. Kurt Angle was never gonna get a 5 star match in the era of Kobashi, Kawada and Misawa. His matches are legit dogshit in comparison. But Meltzer has lowered the standards for ratings immensely since then, especially in the last few years where matches he wouldn't have given a 2 back then he now gives 5 stars.

Angle obviously takes for the sports entertainment aspects, but I'd give Low Ki the edge in matches. Low Ki was retarded, but him being a bully gave his matches much needed structure that you really weren't getting from x-division or indie matches, Super Dragon and Necro Butcher were pretty similar in this. Angle on the other hand would work a comedy storyline and then have the same match he'd have if it was a serious storyline, and without road agents to hold him back his TNA run is full of a lot kick out spot fests.
