Not everyone was privy to the backstage IRL shitshow that was hinted at was real and Cody saw the writing on the wall. So he took the "dumb" choice and stuck with it instead of putting effort and changing up.
But, it was only dumb if Cody had stayed. He didn't. He went to where the milk toast man gimmick could get a proper setting and dressing. He became the biggest Babyface in a decade, biggest pops, merch sales, crowds...
It's more of a gaslighting to pretend all that didn't happen past few years now that TKO price gouging and fatigue has set on Cody for Cena/Rock garbage and what not.. He was great Babyface champ, biggest in a decade, hampered by shit booking, egos of others and surface deep feuds.
