A healthy indies is good for everyone, they should be giving back even if it's not under ideal circumstances. Initiatives like AEW sending out their wrestlers or WWE ID are both positives big picture.

The reality is MJF is still green as shit because Tony signed a guy with 3 whole years of wrestling experience, then rarely booked him his first few years in AEW, so he doesn't have as much in ring experience as a world champion should. He's doing these indie dates literally just to get more in ring practice because AEW doesn't do house shows, and he'll embarrass himself botching on TV.

Not a fan of AEW or WWE whatsoever but I'll admit MJF is high-tier, not nearly top-tier for either company.
For his presentation as an old-school heel he has a lot of bad modern habits. He fits more in-line with Cole or Gargano's ring style than any classic guy
He gets pacing and crowd interaction much better so that puts him pretty high up but there are plenty of guys better

He's had bangers with multiple people and keeps things fresh and interesting. Like the time him and Darby just decided to have a wrestlefuck match and it was awesome. He's a high level talent. He can keep up with Ospreay had a killer hardcore match with Briscoe. That Mistico match was a masterclass in heel work.

Keeping up with AEW Ospreay involves a lot of waiting around
MJF couldn't have an NJPW level match, he's safe in AEW where the crowd is forgiving and low-standards.
