You don’t think Netflix, ESPN, and a mainstream publicized John Cena retirement tour have added lots of new fans in the last 2 years?
WWE is essentially getting to start from scratch. You think most fans know (or care) the history of Cody and Drew? You think most fans know the history of Orton and Drew? You think most fans know how long Roman Reigns was champ, or care? You think most fans even know what The Shieid was?
All of this is new. It’s a new era with new fans.
And in that context, of new international fans with short attention spans who couldn’t give a shit about history, seeing the same top guy all the time gets stale pretty fast.
I doubt we’ll see any more multi-year title runs in WWE. The strategy is going to be building up all these new guys (Fatu, Trick, Femi, Logan, Sneed, Breakker, maybe even Dom and Penta) giving them their first title, then having them drop it 3-4 months later, then rinse and repeat for the next several years.
