You can see this continuously with people like Austin, Bryan, anyone against Super Cena/Reigns, etc, mainly either as a way to vent their own frustration in life or frustration against the fed at the time. Punk was just that, being the scrawny looking, loud mouthed outcast who stood in for the people who got outed for liking the things he did. Honestly, the notion that there was a lot of people "like" Punk who were watching wrestling at the time is incredibly laughable, but besides that, he was a good worker and promo, which also helped him stand out. Regardless of his beliefs, people also liked someone who can actually do the job right.
Now it's just come to a head where he's no longer the hothead with something to say and he's just an older man whose beliefs are starting to be obnoxious and come across as fake, and his work has been notoriously not as good as it once was, leading to a pushback against him these days.
