You couldn't be more wrong, the luchadores gave WCW a real "worldwide" feeling and made the rest of the card feel much more important, not to mention their wrestling wasn't half bad either and had some dime magnets like LA Parka.

Mind you, we have solid data that validates this, they one of the reasons why WCW could beat WWF for years along with Sting and the rise of Goldberg.

From 96-98 the WCW relied heavily on their midcard to make the card entertaining. They knew Hogan and Piper couldn't complete with Hart and Michaels, but the Godwinns and boricuas couldn't hold a candle to the cruiserweights.

No matter how cringe WCW might seem in retrospect, WWF was way worse until around 1999. But neither WWE nor the talking heads (who want to stay in the good graces of WWE) ever talk about that for obvious reasons.

Lmao they would literally get boring chants and signs that said shit "lucha matches are the piss break". It was viewed with the same scorn that /pw/ views the WWE Women's Revolution. The only cruiserweights who got over long-term for their wrestling were Rey and La Parka. Eddie and Jericho only got over when they turned heel and developed their characters and moved away from having heatless smark bait matches.

When I first decided to start watching wrestling full time instead of just sometimes watching it with the family during the early Hogan stuff, I put on WCW and it was Regal vs Alex Wright. After like a minute of that garbage I turned to WWF and was hooked.

Some of us don't need to go back and "watch" because we were alive and following it at the time. Everyone loved the lower card shit. Crowds were louder for the top of the card because those were literally the biggest names in pro-wrestling at the time.

1996-1998 WCW was miles ahead of WWF at the time. Yes, there was also high-profile garbage, but overall it was fantastic. Including the mid- and undercard. It's a shame they focus on the biggest flaws now. The guaranteed money contracts and the egos on top. But a lot of it was just fucking fantastic.

I was just entering high school at the time. I watched pro-wrestling as a kid but was very much at a "this is fake why even bother watching it" stage in my life, particularly in regards to WWF.
WCW was what got me into wrestling again. It felt more "real" than what WWF was doing at the time, even if I did know it was scripted. I stuck with it until the end (although I was watching WWF as well around 1999/2000), watched WWF/E for a few years afterwards, then stopped watching entirely because WWE just wasn't really what I got into it to watch.
I got back into wrestling again around 2018 but only watch Jap wrestling now.

I don't remember a lot of random six-man cruiserweight tags on nitro. that's more like the way tony khan or gedo would have booked it. what I remember is a lot of really good singles matches. a lot of them didn't have much of a storyline but it worked because there was plenty of storytelling in the uppercard. the role of the cruiserweights was to just put on good matches and wow the crowd with things they hadn't seen before. the storylines were mainly carried by the main eventers like the NWO, Sting, The Giant, Savage, Flair, etc. but the cruiserweights had their role and they played it well.

There were 2 million WCW viewers represented in the Nielsen ratings that WWF assumed would just jump ship. Those were mostly the hardcore WCW fans. A few of us, me included, gave WWF a try only to see endless McMahon family promos, the wrestlers we tuned into see get buried, and just watch a company that didn't give a shit about wrestling fumble the Invasion.

A good chunk of that 2 million did tune in to TNA when it started up on TV a few years later. Same with RoH.

The ones I don't get are the the people who actively follow what's happening in the business, including up and coming wrestlers, but absolutely refuse to watch them unless they're in a WWE ring.
Like, they know the names and are excited to see them in WWE but refuse to even watch them. Then they come to WWE and those fans are disappointed because they assume whatever they're doing in WWE must be better than what they were doing before that, never realizing that WWE basically nerfs the styles that made them popular in the first place.

I had a friend in the 90s who was a good example. he would read the wrestling mags and so he knew just a little about the people and happenings in WCW, ECW, and a couple others but wouldn't actually watch any of it. the guy was a massive bret hart mark but he just gave up on wrestling after the montreal screwjob and wouldnt switch over to WCW or anything else. always seemed weird to me that he would remain such a massive WWF mark after his hero got buried so badly.

Why do you keep saying the “Steiner Brothers” kek. Rick Steiner was no where near the top of the card. He was literally lower on the card than most of the Luchadores for most of Nitro’s run. Except for maybe a small slice when Scott was champ at the very end and he would come out with him. Rick wasn’t even as over as other TV champ contenders. Norman doing the big wiggle or Ernest Miller would get bigger pops than Rick, after people stopped barking he was literally a piss break. Pretty much all the Luchadores they would feature were solidly over. Certainly Rey, Juvie, La Parka, Ultimo Dragon and Eddie. Really that’s the majority of them. No one had beef with “flippy shit” and no one tossed around the word “smark” so casually it’s an era you don’t seem to understand. The Smark bait of that era was firmly Russo-shit. Throwing around inside baseball terms and doing worked shoots. That’s what they thought appealed to internet fans who were the Smarks.
