Funny shit is that up to the very night of the match Haitch was booked to win. It was a last minute change to push Taker as the new top baby face against the new heel Austin.

HHH won for storyline reasons, to set up the Austin heel turn. Austin loses against HHH, fears he won't be able to beat Rock, who's at the absolute height of his power, and sells his soul to Vince to become champion again because he needs to be The Guy again.

As much as people hated the Austin heel turn and didn't want it, this fed into it from a storyline perspective, even the subsequent teaming with HHH was like why not ally with the rival he couldn't beat to help hold on to his position after he'd already allied with Vince?
