Even more traditional stuff like Judo has tons of rules changed all the time by groups like the Olympic Comittie to give foreigners a better chance. These martial arts were develiped for use in actual wars, but yes, certain governments banned / eradicated them several times over so only those adopted by Japan are still widely used in modern competition, and everything in MMA is based off of Japanese martial arts in some way or another, which is influenced by Chinese martial arts.
