The issue is that you can only take this story so far as either a heel or face character.
>HeelAn up-and-coming face will dethrone the heel for a massive pop. As the heel probably cheated their way to an undefeated record and the crowd wants to see them lose.
>FaceYou can only build off of an undefeated streak until the crowd begins to ask "when will A fight the champion who is B?". You can then make the decision of the face overcoming the champion and eventually be dethroned by a heel or have the face lose and realize that they need to come back stronger.
As someone who watched WCW back during the Oldberg streak days, which I'm also old but not Jewish. The issue was that Goldberg began to have unannounced wins added to his record. Okay, a few house shows here and there were fine but suddenly it went up by 10+? Yeah, it destroyed a lot of interest.
