Looking back at his midcard matches in WWF like when he was European champion, Eddie was a really good wrestler and technically sound. Early in WCW he absolutely was. He didn't shake it off until late in WCW before he left.

This. He was excellent in the ring but all that personality and charisma people love about him was not present for a good chunk of his time in WCW. You can watch his spilled coffee promo for example and it's really stilted.

I think a lot of that is a consequence of limited to zero mic time for much of the roster. He gets better fast though.
