First time world champs have to be heels unless it is some sort of "long time coming" story ala Shawn Michaels. If you flop as a heel champ, at least as heel you can still get heat, and then booking doesn't waste time trying to push you as a fave champ.

No, what he needed to be a successful world champion was
1) An actual story leading into him becoming champion.
2) A championship victory that actually portrayed him in a heroic manner.
3) To actually win his matches as champion.
