would he have benefited from skipping the invasion and returning in 02/03 or was the invasion key in him getting over? i think they could have waited till post invasion and used vignettes to tease his debut like they did with rey and it could have been even bigger. Rey skipped the invasion and went on to be a top guy.

He was the best thing about the invasion so it’s hard to imagine that. He was a huge part of ecw Rey was not as big a part of wcw as rvd was of ecw. That may have protected Rey from Vince’s jealousy and doomed rvd but rvd has talked about how Stephanie and hhh tried to make an issue of him smelling like weed she told him to change his shirt and it still didn’t work vince still saw the dimes in rvd it was only when Vince said “let’s hang out rob” and rvd basically said “thanks but no thanks, this is work I don’t want to hang out with work people” that his push was stalled, even then he got another one in 2006. He said he didn’t understand that McMahon hangs out with his top guys to get to know them because he said he would have done it if he’d had known why. Rvd could have been a top guy if he wanted to.

This. RVD was never truly over in WWE. Sure people had signs showing their support, but it was all fake. In reality nobody wanted to see him as world champion. They wanted to see Triple H with the title whether they knew it or not. That's what's genius about McMahon that other promoters can't do, he gives the fans what they actually want, not what they think they want.
