Syuri's mother suddenly collapsed in May 2020. When she rushed to her mother, she couldn't stop vomiting. She immediately took her mother to the hospital. Her mother had cervical cancer. Getting hospitalized, she complained to Syuri, "I'm scared. I don't want to die. There are so many things I want to do." She pleaded, "I want you to come every day." However, Syuri was busy with wrestling, and her visits were limited due to the coronavirus.
Sensing that Syuri was busy, her mother stopped making feeble complaints, but her condition deteriorated. Her kidneys got worse. She became unable to urinate, and underwent surgery to insert a catheter. The surgery didn't work. She had another surgery to drain urine through a tube from her back. Given morphine, she became uncertain and repeated, "I don't want to die. I don't want to die." Syuri thought, "I wish I could take her place...".
One day, a nurse told her, "She's in danger. You can stay with her." She wanted to be with her mother. However, as her brother came to the hospital, he saw Syuri's emaciated face and said, "You have a match tomorrow. Go home." Exhausted both physically and mentally, she decided to stay at her brother's house that night. On her way home, her mother seemed to have pleading eyes, "Are you leaving?".
The next morning, her mother drew her last breath.
"I really regret that I didn't stay with her. I was really frustrated with myself for not doing anything. To me, my mother was a great person. I loved her, and respected her. I really want to be someone that makes my mother think "I'm glad I gave birth to this girl,"" she said, and cried again.
After her mother passed away, she became more aware that she had Filipino blood in her. She is proud of her Filipino mother and wants to love her mother's country. She began to use Tagalog in post-match promos and on social media. Her favorite words are "Maraming Salamat po." It means thank you very much.
