Wrestlers always kinda did. Watch Dan Severn vs Royce Gracie, Dan lost the fight because he (at the time) didn't know any hold to finish Royce, but he was in total control over Royce in that fight. BJJ guys always struggled with wrestler or anyone with a decent leg submission game.

But it's shame bjj took over as core in mma. Wrestling had just stagnated. It took 30 years for them to take over and start moving again. Everything would have been way better if wrestling had taken over from start.
