Looking back, when he gave up challenging for the AEW title should have been a huge red flag.
His plan was to do this the whole time most likely.
We don't know his motivations, but Dusty was never a WWF or WCW champion. Things like that mean alot to him.

they realized they fucked up giving him that clause that said he can never challenge for the AEW belt. so naturally the only way to work around that is for him to "leave" the company and "work for vince" then quit that job and re-sign to AEW with the stipulation that he can challenge for the belt again

He wanted to be like his dad and both be a main event wrestler AND book TV wrestling. When AEW formed he thought he’d get the chance to do that but TK took booking influence away from him except his own segments because Cody is a fucking brainlet.
He won’t get the book in WWE either, but he will get an extra couple million dollars to make up for it
