the attitude era was made for adults and had adult humor and storylines and blood and cursing and live sex shows of some type every week, then for no reason, they decided to be a kids show, and so people stopped watching, although they rode that AE wave for a while even as a kids show,

It's because it's more profitable to be sponsored major corporations and they needed a squeaky clean look after the Benoit tragedy. Also the attitude era was not made for adults it was made for the teenagers that were kids in the hulkamania era.

Its mostly unrelated reasons but the connection is that even though people largely knew it was fake for a long time, wrestlers actually took it somewhat seriously. It was closer to a fight with a predetermined ending, rather than a choreographed routine where they don't hit each other at all. The culture of beating people up who said it was fake helped that. Eventually a generation of wrestlers came about who readily acknowledge its fake and don't try to make it realistic or a fight whatsoever. That naturally makes it harder to suspend disbelief and be invested

I don't think them finding out wrestling is a work was the problem, but WWE purposefully marketing themselves to a progressively younger audience throughout the 1990s & 2000s (minus the attitude era)
