it’s not racist at all, he’s using it as a callback to islander tag teams previous. was the original technically racist? it could be considered so, if they were booked for mean-spirited laughs in a racist manner for white dudes, but paying homage to those who came before you is far from disrespect anon. especially in pro wrestling.

I read some academic analysis text once talking about how Kamala was actually a pastiche of traditional racist wrestling tropes of the 50s and 60s, fucked if I can remember where though.

I don't think so. Was the whole "couldn't be controlled, island savage" a little overdone? Maybe? I remember growing up while watching him perform and I can't say I took any kind of impression upon Samoans because of it. It's more of an extreme representation of current gimmicks like Roman or the Usos. The name "Umaga" is even a Samoan term.
Top most likely was, harder to defend but I'm sure you could make a case.
I dunno, there's a lot of things I can see in Umaga that I can see in the Usos and Roman. If he liked playing the character then there's no real issue. The Usos and Roman must like playing theirs.
