I assume it's just for some merch, yes. He's smart enough to know that his name has cache outside WWE, if he's gonna wrestle outside of WWE (which is looking less like a sure thing the longer he doesn't do it?) so if he drops into AEW or something, I'm sure it'll be as Claudio Castagnoli.

Ricochet, Cesaro, Mustafa Ali, you name 'em. Filling out a card with dudes who put on great pure bouts really helps to elevate a show.

I don't think there's like a decent spot here in the US.
There he can be positioned very strongly, in say in NJPW, as a big gaijin in any faction and then like mic skills won't be too much of a worry

A lot of people don't seem to understand this. You need a roster. You need a roster full of dudes that you can trust to work up and down the card and generally bring up the overall consistency of your shows. Guys who your prospects can learn from wrestling, guys that credibly contend against your top stars. AEW was SEVERELY lacking guys like that at the start of 2020 and it made their roster extremely top heavy, but starting with Christian, they've been adding a bunch of them and they should keep doing it because it's made their shows better.
