How do they build matches in Japan? I know the champion will usually cut a promo after their match, but what about prior?

You do six-man tags with the two guys on opposite teams
They interact a bit to tease what's coming and they get the chance to shittalk each other before and after the match
There's also backstage promos after shows

Did AJPW ever do that? I know that’s how modern NJPW does things, but I can’t figure out how AJPW (or any promotion in the 90’s) did it. Or was it the same concept as today?
