Unfortunately, Benoit just wasn't cut out for being top guy. Eddie, however, could've easily been rotated back into a top guy role had the unfortunate not happened. In fact, he was going to beat Batista for the world title at the Raw/SD show in Minneapolis.

Eddie wanted to lose the title. Drawing shitty gates and being the top guy was getting to him. He was tired of all the pressure. He wanted that main event money but couldn't handle the responsibility that came with it by his own admission.

Benoit winning the Royal Rumble match, making Triple Ego tap out clean, and holding big gold for 5 months was just Vince's way of saying "thanks for all of your hard work, pal." Unfortunately he was never considered a top main eventer no matter how phenomenal he was in the ring. That's why he never got another run with the world title even though he should've around 2006/07.

I'll always be salty that either Van Dam or Booker didn't get that nine month reign. Or hell, draft Jericho from Raw to SD and give it to him. After his feud with Christian ended he did fuck all for the next 14 months until his program with Cena. I wouldn't be surprised if Cunter told Vince to keep in him stuck in midcard he'll.
