Steve Austin changed his legal name from Steve Williams so he's fully entitled by law to the Steve Austin trademark.
It's a difference worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in merchandising proceeds, which went to the WWE before he did that.
Now with Matt Hardy's dolls in AEW merch, there's the issue of the WWE's bean counters demanding they go sue AEW for trademark infringement so they can get some of that merch money another promotion is making... but Matt Hardy is his real legal name, so they can't do that, and they can't keep the trademark.
