Because money. WWE gets threatened by anything or anyone getting over and they cut it off at the knees to keep it from getting bigger than their anointed guys. Other places keep selling shirts and can't say no to the merch money.

WWE has a need-to-exist basis on stables and will disband them once their purpose is done. I assume because either the heel that needed them has outgrown the need for one of the breakout star emerges, considering Vince's philosophy on dead weight, stables are a deadweight crutch to them. AEW meanwhile only have them to get more guys on tv at a time, but as such devalue the shit out of what it means to be a stable and refuses to kill any of them. NJPW has one that won't fuck off. Honestly the WWE philosophy is the best one but they just don't book them properly, AEW does kind of but has way too many of them to the point where it doesn't mean shit

Not counting their reunion, The Shield ending was perfectly timed. All of them were a big enough deal that they could survive as main eventers, and the crowd wasn't sick of them. Rollins had a fantastic heel run built off of the heel turn, too.
