Someone asked this question a while back, maybe you can look it up in an archive. From what I remember, an anon thoroughly explained the Chinese wrestling scene.

One thing they mentioned is how the Chinese govt made or manipulated the wrestling shows to promote Chinese martial arts. They also spoke about how outside promoters tried to start up something in China.

Nope. China has no real history with wrestling and didn't have the amateur wrestling history some other countries had.

I've asked some Chinese people about it and none of them have any idea what it is.

WWE has only run shows there 7 times in 12 years, so they don't even seem to think it is really worthwhile.

CIMA tried to run OWE there but the funding was cut and that was it. Just from some of the stuff that made it online, it didn't really seem like the crowds got "it".

The government also really gets in the way which makes it harder.

There's a travel vlog of a bunch of indy guys touring China from like 10 years ago, guys like Chuck Taylor and Colt Cabana. And there had to be traditional dance presentations before the shows that weirded the guys out. Anyway I only remember this because AR Fox was there, and he throws a fit becauae his McDonald's burger came with tomatoes and I found amusing that a guy that sucked cock on camera finds eating tomatoes too disgusting.

There's an emerging scene but it pretty much died down with OWE folding. You still find the occasional shows here and there (Nick Aldis defended the NWA title there, for example) but it never caught on widely. There's a weekly show on youtube I can't remember the name but its not really good from what I've seen. The only thing I remembered is that one of the wrestler is some fat 40yo white guy who's gimmick is being an english teacher. In Hong Kong, the scene is a bit better with some indie shows here and there but it's nothing huge. Ho Ho Lun is one of their biggest name there, but its pretty much by virtue of being one of the few guys still wrestling in the area after several years.
