Cody will go down in the history of The Elite as just the guy who replaced Adam Cole while he was dead. Getting Jericho was far, far more important to the success of AEW than having Cody there at the outset was.
Eddie fucking Kingston is more over with the AEW fans now than Cody ever was. So is Miro, even though we haven't seen him in months. Hell, I'd wager that Marty Scrull would get a bigger pop showing up in AEW even now than Cody would have ever gotten again if he had re-signed. But Cody is the biggest self-mark in the business and couldn't handle not being the number one guy after Punk, Danielson, and Cole coming in made him face the fact that it wasn't simply a matter of waiting for Jericho to retire and Kenny to sawdust himself. The sad thing is that he honestly believes he's going to become the number one guy in WWE.
