Most people, at least in public, avoid calling or referring to anything with words that can be considered offensive in most social contexts - not out of respect or tolerance, but because people are lazy and don't want confrontation, for the most part.
Everyone in that bar could be straight, but you still run the risk of a single person calling you out or making any semblance of a scene when you choose certain words. Naturally, your odds of being "the bad guy" are much higher than everyone telling the other guy to fuck off. Not necessarily because they agree with him, but because social contexts lean towards it. People don't want trouble. People don't wanna make a scene. So people, 9 times out of 10, hide their power levels and adapt.
