It's true, literally everybody does. In the modern recording process you have multiple track layers per instrument. So when you play live, some of those tracks are pre-recorded and played as backing tracks.

It's literally been this way since the 70's guys.

I have heard many live acts clearly using backing tracks. Often its older musicians who can't do it like they use to though.

Look up live clips of Kiss on their current tour its one of the worst examples I have seen of people who are clearly not performing.

Some genres eschew multitrack recording, most notably the grunge movement of the 90's eschewed everything that was percreived as glossy or excessive, the sound of the time was very paired down.
But in general, multitrack recording is the norm, and backing tracks are how it's resolved in a live setting.

As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, this is normal for bands nowadays because of multi-tracking, but its also used in instances where a band member plays more than one instrument on an album and they dont want to hire a touring musician to fill the spot. For instance Van Halen used to have their keyboards in a backing track because Eddie was too busy playing guitar and he didn't trust anyone else to do it right.
