I'm genuinely surprised that he didn't understand why the fans turned on him. Not only were his matches shit, but he was going toe to toe with jobbers and working programmes with shitters.

The idea he was a Homelander type guy who didn't know why people were turning him was a based idea, but no he genuinely was living the gimmick with no idea of what to do.

Here’s the main issue. Cody Rhodes will only ever be Cody Rhodes. In AEW he jumped out of fear of being lost in the shuffle. In WWE when they eventually go on a signing or call up spree he’ll inevitably end up right back to what got him to jump ships both times he has done so. At the end of the day, he’s just Cody Rhodes.

He’s obsessed with the concept of Cody Rhodes he’s created for himself, and that’s forever entangled with how he views Dusty’s legacy. Maybe he gets fast-tracked and Vince slaps the title on him, but how long does that last? How are you going to feel when you’re booked to get squashed by whatever jacked fucko Vince gets obsessed with? I don’t know. Cody craves love. He also is on a life mission to live up to his Dad. He wants to do his dad proud.
He left WWE because he was a nobody, a joke, and no matter what he couldn't make it work like his dad did the polka dots. So he did a bunch and then came AEW.
AEW was his Jim Crockett Promotions. He thought beyond nay shadow of a doubt AEW was his. That Tony would be like Jim. He'd sign checks and trust Cody (mostly) to run the show like Dusty did JCP. He'd try to avoid his Dad's history of only booking himself in the main event.
And then everything went wrong. Tony wasn't Jim Crockett. He wasn't just going to sign checks. AEW was, is l, and will always be his. I believe, without evidence l, that the other EVPs took offense to Cody's ego and asserted themselves that he wasn't Dusty, he wasn't the man in charge. This led to Cody being sidelined in his mind. Khan took the book and the creative. The other EVPs did their thing and Cody was lost. He had creative over his own matches still but he's just not good at that. So contract time came and Cody's last ditch effort seeking love was "pay me" more than the others. Khan balked and rubbed salt INTO Cody's wounded ego.
So Cody left. WWE persued him. Vince flew to meet him. Vince gave him his name and branding. Vince gave him the assurance of the end of Stardust. Vince gave him Wrestlemania in Texas as his return and a push in the door. Cody is home, he is relaxed, he is happy. And his direction has turned to the other side of his Dad's legacy....attainibg something Dusty never was "good enough" for, the WW(F)E belt.

My overall thoughts are Cody's ego got in the way of logic. This isn't 1986 anymore. Billionaires don't turn over their money and creations to essentially front line staff to manage. Khan isn't some blackwood country millionaire. He is a smart fucking guy, he's dealt with high caliber athletes, high caliber television deals and such. And he is a lifelong student of wrestling.
That is where I THINK Cody is being diplomatic now (but it may crack). I truly do not believe that Cody respects Tony Khan because he's an outsider, he's not a worker, he hasn't grown up in the business. He was offended that Tony would have audacity to take the book from him, the son of Dusty and think he can do better. Then he didn't even pay Cody what Cody thought he was worth. Cody thought he'd get to build AEW where he and maybe Jericho were the biggest names. They build from nobodies into somebodies. Then the hiring of bigger names started and the end of Cody began.

The thing Cody has miscalculated is the reason he took off and became a star was in large part thanks to the outcast wrestling fans who really got behind him because they respected him for saying “Fuck You” to WWE and leaving.
He knew that and would constantly feed his base with raw meat by breaking thrones, faking a pedigree in big matches, and frequent anti WWE verbal jabs.
He’ll gain a bunch of new WWE fans who have never heard him cry in a promo while talking about Dusty before and think it’s touching — but he’s lost lost a lot of people who now see his whole persona as completely disingenuous.
Cody jumped because he backed himself into the corner of being a perennial midcarder via poorly received storylines and an inexplicable stipulation where he couldn't challenge for the world title.
I think ultimately if he wasn't considered a top guy in AEW, then he won't be in WWE. He'll get a nice run with one of the titles and then settle into the midcard.
I doubt it was any one thing in particular. I think going back to WWE as a big star was always his goal when he originally left, but AEW ended up happening and at least temporarily clouded the picture for what he wanted for his career.
While I suspect the supposed beef between him and the rest of the Elite was overblown by some, it seems pretty clear that something happened that caused them to no longer work directly together on screen anymore, so the likelihood that they drifted apart to some degree compared to when AEW first started seems high.
All the EVPs lost some of the power they had at the beginning of the promotion.
Crowds reactions to him were getting worse and worse and apparently he didn't want to be a heel.
In the context of that and the world title stipulation that he wanted to stick to, there wasn't a ton left for him to do there and regardless, it doesn't seem that he and TK were aligned with where he should go from here.

I think all of that can easily amount to "it's time." Like I said, coming back to WWE was always his goal and while I think AEW may have pushed that aside for a period of time, I can see it sticking in his mind at least as a back-up plan if at any point things in AEW aren't working out anymore. At the end of the day, if his "plan B" amounts to jumping ship for a lot of money, getting treated like a huge star, and getting the crowd reactions he wants, I can't blame him in the slightest. It seems like the right move for all parties to me (including AEW).

Vince doesn't care about AEW, why else would he agree to Cody retaining basically his entire AEW shtick? Triple Paul was literally the only one who was gunning for AEW and he's no longer in the picture. Cody was ready to go, and AEW was ready to let him go. He knew he wasn't a good fir for them anymore, and they knew it too as they didn't want to pay him what he wanted or provide the creative he wanted to do. Its really no different than anyone leaving a job and going to a new one with a fresh start and a company that actually wants you there.
In 2022, this Cody Rhodes is just a much bigger, better fit for WWE than AEW. He is clearly happy with everything he got in the deal, and the WWE are clearly behind him. But more importantly the WWE fanbase is loving him right now. Its funny to me how so many are being psychics about what will happen in 4-9 months. Nothing is promised, so just enjoy it for the moment if you like it. Right now if handled right, Cody could grow into the one to take down Roman. And that would be one hell of a long-term great storyline if handled correctly.
At the end of the day he wants to be WWE champion. It has more prestige than the AEW championship and he wants to do it for Dusty.
