I would argue that Cena was the only one keeping afloat the ever-sinking ship that is WWE's ratings, but it's irrelevant. Vince McMahon will always be under the Russo curse because Russo is the only one who successfully interfaced a gay outdated carny business with a TV audience.

Even if you are an Attitude Eraetty Boomer, it was HHH who drove off the fans before Cena even got their. Business went up the year Batista and Cena were cemented as main eventers.

The gradual dropoff did happen, but had very little to do with Cena. In fact, Cena was the first top guy to not really be a difference maker in the ratings. Not an anti-draw, though, just another cog in the wheel.

This. Damage was already done by the time Cena became champ in 2005. The botched invasion angle, Paul's reign of terror, Lesnar and Paul being the top guys even though they were both heels, the company going public (ie making money even when they were creatively bankrupt) killed WWE creatively

I have no idea. Most of the audience Cena held were kids who grew up and realized he was so cringe they just stopped watching wrestling outright. Going back and watching his matches most of them are OK at best. Cena's push and popularity was a very short-term solution to a much bigger problem with the company.

His segments added up to 1.5 million viewers. He still has the biggest ratings gain of the past few years with an additional 400k which is more than Rock, Austin, Flair, Hogan, etc... Cena is also the top merch seller ever.
By 2001 Rock and Austin were already losing their drawing power and the downfall of ratings was started, not helped by the millions who stopped watching when WCW ended.
