Page has had a few spots during his reign where he's really felt like he's there. But he's been inconsistent. Which is why I want him to go over Cole and to get the big Punk programme for that experience. I think his second Championship run will be great. But this one is just too inconsistent.

I haven't been too crazy with Page as champ because I feel like he's had no true good heel opponent. Him vs. The Elite was great because Kenny could draw in that heel heat pretty well and it elevates Page.
Where as Adam Cole is too liked and will get cheered.

Hangman only feels like a real champion roughly 1/3rd of the time, and even then he's on shaky ground. I think in the long term leaving New Japan will be his biggest mistake, once his championship reign is over I think he will have been so exposed as a midcarder that I don't know if he will ever rise to that level again. If he had stayed in Japan and gone under Tanahashi's tutelage, he would be their top babyface gaijin right now and the Ace of the Entire Universe would have taught him how to be a bona fide main event player rather than a midcarder in a main event spot because his friends run the company.
He's good enough for Danielson to carry him into feeling like a star, but feuding with Atom Cole has been heat death for both of them, before his promo last dynamite it had been weeks since he had done anything with an ounce of conviction.

you are being a doomer. Kenny and Mox/Dean had a quite lackluster reign when they became world champions for the first time in their careers and nowadays they are seen as credible top guys.

I like Hangman on paper and would like to see him become the star that AEW's most uncritical fans see him as, but it's really up in the air whether that will happen. They have been building up to this title reign since day one of the company and there are more segments where he comes across as a complete geek than ones where he feels badass (like last Dynamite). I suppose it is Tony's booking style at this point to have people learn on the job, and its not like it hasn't worked in some instances (compare Jade when she started to right now) but its hard to ignore how much likely Hangman is to rise to his potential (which I think is huge) than he would have been if he had gone under Tanahashi's wing and built himself up there. Compare Master Wato just last year when he fucked up that jackknife spot (I forget which PPV) to how dimes he looked fighting Despy a few months ago; if Hangman had stayed in that environment he would probably be dimes incarnate right now, he's be perceived the same way Jay or post-clue Ospreay are rather than a Potempkin champion. Maybe he will get himself to that level on his own, and I hope he does, but it seems far from guaranteed in an environment where he is already treated as a main eventer and has less obvious incentive to improve.

That's the problem with AEW, for some reason Tony Khan is against second runs with the World title. Most World matches are completely heatless because you know if the guy hasn't spent at least nine months with the belt, it ain't changing hands.

To give him a bit of slack, I may have undersold just how monumentally bad his booking has been. I've never seen much of late WCW so I can't say that his presentation/booking is the worst that any top guy in a major company has had, but it has to be up there. The downward spiral/rock bottom/slow redemption arc has been done in the past, but having a significant portion of the storyline revolve around the Bucks' ability to act and speak convincingly was a disastrous mistake, and the whole thing felt limp. After losing to Kenny his worthless heat death feuds with a crippled Jannetty and a human TAPOUT t-shirt did nothing to help him, and his association with the reddit order has been draining any sense of an aura from his character for over a year; Tony should be strung up for involving him/allowing him to be in the same camera frame with them after he won the belt. Thank fuck we're almost at the end of the Cole/UE feud, hopefully next we can have him feud with someone more like Danielson that can elevate him.

It's unclear whether he would have been viewed on the same level as Jay and Ospreay had he stayed. As far as we know he could have ended up as Juice Robinson.
