He was obviously a real influential guy in wrestling as you said, he was one of the best promos ever and had one of the best looks ever in wrestling. His only downfall is that he had a real short peak due to drugs and depression over Vince cutting his run short.

Backlund didn't have a terrible look, he was kind of par for the course at the time.
Billy Graham was a head of his time and anybody they put up after him (except Hogan) would have been a step down.

There's a reason fans called him Howdy Doody during the latter half of his run when I was growing up. He was bland and too much of a goody two shoes. So when he came back in the early 90's I was like 'Not this shit again.', but the run >>5257829 was kino and redeemed him in my eyes. As an old boomer who watched this live as it happened as a 10/11 year old Backlund was legit scary as a challenger to Bret. All you knew about him at the time was he was a guy from the pre Hogan years who had completely snapped since he was replaced and losing in a completely era. The chickenwing was legit over as a hold that nobody got out of and was injuring people while he cut these crazy ass promos. Then the moment he won at the Rumble and came off as a serious heel champion they instantly buried him into a joke gimmick with the Diesel squash.

I wish they kept interest in him post Nash squash. Just have him go even crazier and challenge for the IC Title or something. His promos were great, give him a heavy and that's a top tag team in a dry era. I really recommend his book by the way, if you're into reading about wrestling.
