They openly acknowledge on air that it's not the same guy and part of the angle is how ridiculous it is.

Don't know about you but I don't have to headcannon storylines in something that is supposed to be straight forward good versus evil. Maybe if you just accepted that the best storylines are over the top you wouldnt have to make up all this bullshit in your head.

It makes perfect sense in kayfabe, the sort of people who complain about it are the same people who love Orange Cassidy, but at least the finger poke isn't a joke. The only really bad thing is you can say it hurts the prestige of the title, but this was late 90s wcw so that's a given.

I didn't watch WCW growing up and never bothered to look into it, so I don't know the context of the Finger Poke. Is it any different than HHH vs Shawn Michaels in that match around Christmas 97 where Hunter ran the ropes like 10 times while Michaels was on the floor, covered him, then got one of the belts off him?

It's not the same, because it was an open farce IN kayfabe when DX did it which was part of the story. Slaughter pit them against each other in a "gotcha" attempt on his part so they had a bit of fun with it at his expense and Shawn basically gifted Hunter the Euro belt, which he didn't need because he was fucking WWF champ anyway.
With the fingerpoke, Nash and Hogan were feuding prior to this. And Nash came out of it with zero titles, unlike Shawn. And they tried to justify it with the "we're like a corporation consolidating lol" but the problem is Nash gets nothing out of it and has zero character motivation to let Hogan cuck him and trade in being world champ to go back to being Hogan's lackey.
This isn't even about wrestling, this is just retarded story telling period in any medium you can think of. Characters and their motivations are supposed to make sense.

It's hard to say, part of it seemed to be about WCW signing Nash and Hall, and Vince trying and failing to prove that it was the characters of Diesel and Razor who were popular, not the men that played them, but on the other hand, you were meant to be booing them, they were being managed by heel JR and it was being acknowledged that they weren't the real guys.
