I didn't understand the heel turn as a kid. I just kept rooting for him. I didn't care that he was made to look like a bitch in the Kurt Angle feud, where he was crying and such. I just knew eventually he'd turn back so it was all good. But I was never mad when he hurt Lita

The problem with the Austin heel run is that he just came back from a year away from the business.

Wrestling moved so fast back then and that was more than enough for people to not get sick of the babyface Stone Cold. I know its a meme to say Rock was more over than Stone Cold, but when he returned in 2000 he was still at a much higher level than the Rock ever reached.

somewhat true, but he had no one to work with and Rock was gone. the whole dynamic of the show was gone in one night, and they had no incentive with WCW gone. it was over in the blink of an eye.

with stone cold, even when he was a face, I never got the impression that he was "with" the fans. Apathetic maybe, perhaps even fond of, but he never did anything for them - he did it for himself. He was cheered because he was an aggressive and abrasive redneck, it didn't matter who he was against - so when he turned heel and kept doing the same thing he had always done he kept getting cheered because he wasn't any different to how he'd always been - other than he wasn't an interesting because they didn't really have a good face for him to feud with. a more efficient heel turn would have been if he became meek, quiet and corporate - the antithesis of what everyone loved him for.

People just weren't ready for Heel Austin yet. They should've given it another year.

Austin was out of action for an entire year, then he returns to take a backseat to HHH and Angle until Mania when he's finally back in a main event program and they turned him heel right away. People wanted one more babyface run from Austin, one where his main adversary was HHH (who he'd eventually beat in revenge for the car thing) and then they could've turned him heel.

The perpetual blue balls from Austin never truly getting revenge on HHH hurt him more than anything else, and we all know why HHH was going over at that point.
