Dumbass he asked for a stupidly high pay rise to get out of AEW without tarnishing his professional image. His gimmick was clearly created to suit Vince which tells me a return was his plan all along, AEW was just a stepping stone before the return like Drew and TNA.

If he left for no reason it wouldn't make Vince or WWE fans happy because then he looks unreliable.

This. Cody was actually planning on a WWE return after his run on the indies and with ROH/NJPW. AEW just so happened to come into being and he wasn't going to pass up a chance to raise his stock even more. Had he come back to WWE after ROH he'd be in good standing but after AEW now he's an actual player in WWE. And they're going to treat him like gold because it means everyone else in AEW is watching to see how he's used and that could be them. Cody is smart as fuck.
