The big differences are that they had big megastar guys and a lot of them at the same time. Guys with that aura, or potential to have it, don't get a shot right now because there is a weird emphasis on spamming moves.
TV was the primary source of entertainment at the time.
Pop culture and what wrestling were doing meshed really well very briefly; nu-metal, white trash, jackass, reality tv, etc. It fit perfectly in with the zeitgeists.
There were characters that kids got in to, there are none of those anymore. You get bad comedy for 50 year old men now instead.
Those are a lot of the key differences.
